For those of you that are use to using the email client that comes with Windows, such as Outlook Express or Vista Mail, you will be surprised to know that Windows 7 does not come with one.
You have two free choices; Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird.
Thunderbird, here is a review of it: http://www.bakoweb.com/blog/archives/446
Windows Live mail:
Microsoft did not leave us out in the cold either. They offer a free email client for download called Windows Live Mail. Read more and download it here:
http://download.live.com/wlmail It works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
It takes a few moments to get use to, but it operates just like Vista Mail (Windows Mail), only it has lots of cool new protection.
It throws suspected spam and phishing email into a junk folder that when opened, won’t let you open a junk or phishing email unless you tell it that it isn’t junk, this protects you from sending Web Beacons out to the spammers or phishers so they know you opened their email. It also has great spam settings that allow you to teach it what is spam and what isn’t, and to recognize your contacts with legit email, all using the built in spam filter.
It won’t let you click on suspected phishing email links, unless you tell it that it’s not a phishing email.
It won’t let you open an attachment that it has deemed unsafe, unless you tell it that it is ok.
It has an awesome photo program for sending and viewing photos in email. Sending photos, it will resize the photos for you if you want it to, and you can choose how to lay them out in the email. Viewing photos it can put the photos into a slide show for you.
It has a spell check as you type, like Microsoft Word does, it underlines the misspelled word after you type it. Just right click the misspelled word, and choose the correct spelling.
You also don’t have to use their Live Online account; you can use the program right on your computer, which is what I do, as I don’t like storing my emails on their server.
It has multiple email support, so you can check on all your email accounts in one place or in separate accounts. It separates your email into each account that you can check individually, or click the All Inbox link, and you can view the email from all of your accounts in one place.
It works great for your BakoWeb Account email accounts, as well as free accounts such as Yahoo or Gmail.
It finds and migrates all your email, accounts and settings from Vista Mail or Outlook Express. So it’s easy to Upgrade.
All in all we give Windows Live mail a 4 star rating out of 5 and highly recommend it.
I recommend that before you migrate to Windows 7, that you download Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail, and transfer all your mail and settings from Vista Mail or Outlook Express to Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail. Then do a backup of Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail before migrating to Windows 7.
